About Margaret Bernstein

Margaret Bernstein is an award winning singer-songwriter, composer and flutist from New York with a unique voice, dynamic lyrics, and a positive and compelling message. Known for her socially awakened songs and uplifting Instrumental compositions, Margaret performs throughout the US and the UK as a soloist and with her band. Margaret’s piano-based songs, which feature her lyrical yet passionate voice, have been gracing the college and internet radio airwaves and social media sites. Unlike other singer-songwriters of the adult contemporary/ pop-rock genre, Margaret is a classically trained musician who is also an accomplished instrumental performer.

Currently, Margaret is in the studio with Blondie’s production team recording her sophomore singer-songwriter album, “Distant Thunder”, which consists of thirteen soul wrenching and thought provoking songs. “Cinderella Falling”, the first single and the soundtrack of the popular music video featuring Margaret as an alluring fairy Godmother dancing with her rooster, has already generated much applause and interest from the media and fans. In addition, “Reciprocity”, “Before You Leave” and “Lightning Bolt” are also currently receiving reviews and airplay. Margaret’s debut singer-songwriter release, “Bricks in the Wall”, is a collection of eleven original songs and a music video aimed at the awareness and healing of the lesser-known aspects of domestic violence. In addition, Margaret has recorded two instrumental albums, "Full Circle" and "On the Threshold Of Change", which feature her original compositions for flute with her own piano accompaniment, many of which were inspired by her pilgrimages to India as well as her Scottish and Russian/Jewsih heritages. All of Margaret’s CD’s are actively sold at her shows, through her website, via retail and internet outlets as well as through i tunes and a number of digital music providers. In addition, several of her songs and compositions have been licensed to television and video productions including the Chelsea Lately show.

The passion, which Margaret puts into her music, is also evident in her work as an educator and advocate for youth. Margaret regularly performs assembly concerts with her five-piece band and sound engineer as a part of the SAFE through the Arts program, a violence prevention program, which Margaret created and instructs at public middle schools throughout New York State. Margaret’s band has also actively been engaged in performing benefit concerts for domestic violence and women’s shelters. To date, Margaret has performed programs and concerts with her band in a dozen counties and is looking forward to touring on the college circuit beginning this fall.

It is interesting to note how diligently Margaret has been engaged in all aspects of her music career from co-producing her albums and music videos to working on the marketing and promotion teams. She is responsible for the storyboard and all location scouting of both her music videos and album artwork. In addition, she works in tandem with her staff at Growing Azalea Music, her self-started record label and ASCAP affiliated music publishing company, and her publicity team at Cyber PR in actively moving her career forward. She is also supported by a number of affiliated organizations including the Recording Academy, of which she is a voting member. In addition, she has the enthusiastic support of several thousand fans worldwide who are inspired not only by her music by also by her monthly newsletter and reflective blogs and consider her to be “an excellent role-model for women.”

Growing up into a family of professional dancers and educators, Margaret was exposed to the importance of both the arts and education from an early age. Encouraged by her Waldorf Education, she began composing short instrumental compositions and writing poetry by age seven. Margaret later engaged in careers as a freelance flutist in the San Francisco Bay Area and a public school music teacher in upstate New York before launching her career as a singer-songwriter. Her virtuosity on the flute earned her two degrees in performance (Oberlin Conservatory, BM; and Arizona State University, MM) and won her several awards and scholarships. As a flutist, Margaret appeared on a compilation album produced by The Who's Pete Townsend and has shared the stage with Tuck and Patty, Annie Haslam (of Renaissance), and jazz guitarist Mimi Fox among other notable musicians.

Margaret’s musical compositions have also earned her international recognition through repeated awards from UNISONG, West Coast Songwriters’ Organization, and ASCAP. In addition, Margaret has written two original children's musicals, “The Little Seed” and “The Trees' Song for Peace” as well as many songs for children and school choruses, which have been performed at public, private, and charter schools throughout the United States. Despite her engaging career, Margaret manages to balance her musical endeavors with her other interests, which include hiking, cross-country skiing, and riding her horse, Reba. Margaret, who has residences in Brooklyn, New York and East Sussex, England currently resides on her farm in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York with her fourteen-year-old son, Julian, and their nine animals.
